The ice pack on the Saône in Lyon, above the faubourg de Vaise. Winter of 1880.

Under the effect of a “polar vortex”, the cold reached as low as -25° in France. A blanket of snow fell, rivers and streams froze over and thick ice floes formed. The break-ups that followed the thaw were equally dramatic.
