Charette, born François Athanase Charette de La Contrie (1763-1796), was a French soldier and royalist general during the War in Vendée.
After a distinguished military career (American War of Independence, campaigns in the North Sea, the West Indies, and the Mediterranean), he resigned at the start of the French Revolution and returned to the family manor in Vendée. In this still-monarchist province, Charette established himself as commander of the insurgents, who united to form the Catholic and Royalist Army. But the Republican forces fought back, inflicting defeat and massacres on the Catholic Army and the population. In 1794, after negotiations with representatives of the Convention, Charette took up arms again, supported by the exiled princes, the British, French émigrés, and the Chouans of Brittany. But Charette was defeated once more, then captured, sentenced to death, and executed by firing squad in Nantes.
With the death of its iconic general, the Vendée uprising came to an end.
