Pierre Victurnien Vergniaud (1753-1793) was a leading politician during the French Revolution. An elected representative of the Gironde, he was one of the great orators of his time. He was the one who proclaimed the Fatherland in danger (July 1792), announced the suspension of king Louis XVI (August 1792), and pronounced the death sentence against him (January 1793).
But like many Girondins, he came into conflict with the most radical Jacobins. In June 1793, he was arrested, sentenced to death and guillotined.
