Grandson of Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska, Charles-Philippe of France (1757-1836) succeeded his two brothers Louis XVI and Louis XVIII under the name Charles X. His firm intention was to restore the ideas and values of the Ancien Régime.
Despite his unpopularity in Paris, Charles X’s reign was a period of political stability and economic prosperity, during which France returned to the ranks of the great powers.
His foreign policy was marked in particular by French expeditions to Greece (1828) and Algeria (1830), paving the way for the colonization of that country.
The revolutionary days of 1830, known as the “Three Glorious Days,” forced him to abdicate. Louis-Philippe d’Orléans succeeded him under the title of “King of the French” (rather than “King of France”) proposed by the deputies.
