André Masséna (1758–1817) was a French military officer, elevated by Napoleon to the titles of Duke of Rivoli, Prince of Essling and Marshal of the Empire.
Ranked among the most famous generals of the Revolution and the Empire, Masséna demonstrated his talents as a strategist and tactician on the battlefield
He made a decisive contribution to the victories at Arcole, Rivoli, Zurich, Wagram, and many others.
A British military historian considered him to be ‘undoubtedly the most capable of all the marshals of the First Empire’. And Wellington admitted that he ‘could not sleep soundly’ when facing Masséna on the battlefield’.
