The Committee of Public Safety was the first branch of the French revolutionary government established by the Convention to deal with the dangers threatening the Republic in the spring of 1793 (invasion and civil war); the second was the Committee of General Security. From September 1793, what came to be known as the Grand Committee of the Year II was formed. It suspended the Constitution, organised a revolutionary government (the Reign of Terror, economic interventionism) and exercised a de facto dictatorship until the fall of Robespierre (July 1794).
