The Tafna (or Oued Tafna) is a river in Algeria located in the northwest of the country. It rises in the Tlemcen Mountains, at an altitude of 1,600 meters, then flows through the provinces of Tlemcen and Aïn Témouchent before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea, 165 km further, opposite the island of Rachgou.
The famous Tafna Treaty was signed on its banks in 1837 between Emir Abdelkader and French General Bugeaud.
This engraving is the work of late 19th-century travelers, linked to colonial interests, who wanted to showcase this part of the French Empire.
