Château d’If, a French fortress built on the orders of King François I between 1527 and 1529, France

Classified as a historic monument, it was mainly used as a prison during its 400 years of official service. Made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo, it is one of the most visited sites in Marseille.
