El Kantara is an oasis located in the southwest of the Aurès Mountains. Its natural site and rich ancient heritage were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1923.
Founded by Berbers, the town was called Calceus Herculis under Roman occupation. Centuries later (1844), the French army occupied the region... until independence, achieved after a hard-fought struggle in 1962.

This engraving is the work of late 19th-century travelers, linked to colonial interests, who wanted to showcase this part of the French Empire.
