In 1895, the general store’s main entrance on rue de Clignancourt in Paris was given a monumental facelift, with the pediment featuring Progress driving Commerce and Industry, a high relief by Jules Dalou and sculptures by Alexandre Falguière.

In 1912, on the eve of the First World War, the establishment, which employed 15,000 people, was reputed to be the largest in the world in its category. It closed in 1930.
