Johannes Gutenberg (1400-1468), born and died in Mainz, was a German printer. His invention of movable metal type revolutionized text reproduction. It played a decisive role in the spread of knowledge in Europe during the Renaissance and into the modern era.
This engraving published around 1850 shows the project for a statue to be erected in his memory in his native Mainz by the artist THORVALDSEN.
