Construction of Amiens Cathedral began in the 13th century, making it contemporary with the cathedrals of Reims, Bourges, or Beauvais. Its interior dimensions make it the largest cathedral in France; only Beauvais Cathedral surpasses it in inner height.
It is considered the archetype of the classical Gothic style for the nave and the Rayonnant Gothic style for the choir. The Flamboyant Gothic style is present in the rose windows of the western façade and transept, the upper parts of the north tower, the Beau Pilier, the stalls, and the statuary of the choir enclosure.
