Lucien Bonaparte (1775–1840) was Napoleon Bonaparte’s second brother. A French politician, he served as a deputy, President of the Council of Five Hundred, Minister of the Interior.
He helped his brother Napoleon seize power, but fell out with him over family matters and distanced himself politically from 1803 onwards.
‘I honour him, I respect him, I admire him as head of government, but I no longer love him as a brother’.
A prisoner of the English, then exiled to Italy, and later returning during the Hundred Days, he ended his life in Italy, having been granted the title of prince by two successive popes. He died, leaving behind a vast Bonaparte lineage: twelve children from two marriages !
