Jean-Paul Marat (1743–1793) was a French doctor, journalist and politician. Elected as a deputy, he played a leading role through his newspaper *L’Ami du peuple*.
As a journalist, he wrote: ‘What will we have gained by destroying the aristocracy of the nobles, if it is replaced by the aristocracy of the rich? And if we are to groan under the yoke of these new upstarts […]’

Suffering from excruciating migraines, Marat would often wrap a handkerchief soaked in vinegar around his head to relieve the pain.
