The Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (Sancti Germani de pratis), which includes the present-day Saint-Germain-des-Prés Church, is a former Benedictine abbey in Paris (France), located in what is now the 6th arrondissement. Founded in the 6th century by the Merovingian king Childebert I, it owes its present name to Saint Germain, Bishop of Paris.
The Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is the oldest of the great churches of Paris.
This Gothic building, one of the earliest of its kind, contributed to the spread of this style. It is therefore of significant archaeological importance.
During the Revolution, the church was converted into a saltpetre factory. Worship was not restored there until April 1803. Since then, the church has served exclusively as a parish church.
