Every year, the Orthodox Church celebrates Theophany, a feast marking the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River. Combining water rituals and spirituality, this event is a lively celebration for Orthodox believers, accompanied by rites and practices that express their faith. Water, a key element of this feast, recalls both the baptism of Christ and spiritual purification.
Our engraving depicts a “Theophany bath,” or yordan, as it is still practiced in several Orthodox countries, usually on the night of January 6 to 7. Believers drill a hole in the ice, often in the shape of a cross, into which they immerse themselves. These immersions, performed three times as a sign of the Trinity, are a symbol of purification and an imitation of Christ’s baptism.
