The Church of the Stavropoleos Monastery, Bucharest, 1918

The church of the Stavropoleos Monastery in Bucharest, is an Orthodox church whose protectors are the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The church was completed in 1724 under the reign of Nicolas Mavrocordato, prince of Wallachia. Originally, the revenues of the church and monastery were largely provided by the inn located in the same compound. The inn and the monastery were eventually demolished while the dome and its paintings were destroyed after successive earthquakes. The paintings were however restored at the beginning of the 20th century. The church is all that remains of the original monastery.
