The former Place Jean Bart in Dunkirk, circa 1895

This view of peaceful Dunkirk dates from the late 19th century. Almost half a century before the almost total destruction the city suffered during the Second World War. Today’s rebuilt square has only one thing in common with the one at the turn of the century: the statue of  Jean Bart, a famous french corsair.
