The Holy Trinity

In this engraving published in the late 19th century by the ‘Maison de la Bonne Presse’, nowadays known as Bayard Presse, the Holy Trinity is depicted as a large triangle in which an imposing bearded figure, God the Father, is seated, his feet resting on the globe of the earth. In his arms he holds up the cross on which his son Jesus is tied. Between the two, the Holy Spirit appears in the form of a dove.
The medallion around the central image shows 4 scenes : Jesus surrounded by his apostles, the baptism of Jesus, the visit of 3 angels to Abraham, and Saint Augustine’s encounter with an angel disguised as a child, reminding him of the impenetrability of the mystery of the Holy Trinity.
