On the left (i.e. on the right for Christ), the soul rises from the righteous man’s deathbed. It is accompanied by a guardian angel. Mary and Joseph are also present. Another angel holds the scales of justice, which tip in favor of the righteous man, whom Jesus welcomes with benevolence.
The situation is different on the right, where the soul rising from the deathbed is that of the sinner. The scales of his merits tip the wrong way. With a gesture of his left hand, Jesus pushes it away. Ashamed, the sinner’s soul veils its face as the demons – Lucifer at their head – pull its chains towards the infernal abysses already on fire at the bottom of the image.
