Before the first underground subway lines went into service in 1904, several overhead rail lines served the various counties of the future New York City.

These steam-powered overhead lines were built along Manhattan’s main avenues. The first, opened in 1868, ran along Greenwich Street and Ninth Avenue. Subsequent lines were built on Second, Third and Sixth Avenues. All these lines have now disappeared.
