When they were built around 1781, the bell towers of Saint Sulpice Church in Paris housed eight bells. All were dedicated to prominent figures of the French nobility. They were named Louise-Antoinette, Louise-Marie, Charlotte-Thérèse, Adélaïde, Victoire, Josèphe-Adélaïde, Jeanne-Fortunée and Louise-Hortense.
These bells were later replaced. The five current bells, installed in the north tower, form one of the most important peals in Paris. Among them is the bourdon Thérèse, probably depicted in this engraving : 2 metres in diameter and weighing 6,000 kilos, melted in 1824.
