The Saumur ice floe and sea of ice. Winter of 1880

Under the effect of a “polar vortex”, temperatures reached -25° in France. A blanket of snow covered the land, and many rivers froze over, forming thick ice floes. The break-ups that followed the thaw were equally dramatic.
