The 19th century saw a particular interest in the exploration of the polar regions. In 1866, Jules Verne published The Adventures of Captain Hatteras, inspired by the mysterious disappearance, two decades earlier, of Captain John Franklin’s expedition as it attempted to find the “Northwest Passage” (supposedly connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans via northern Canada).
But his two ships, trapped in the ice, remained stuck for a year and a half. Finally, the 130 sailors abandoned the ships. None of them survived.
Over time, several bodies were found in the ice. As for the two ships, HMS Erebus and the legendary HMS Terror, their wrecks were located very recently in the icy waters of the Arctic.
