The Tour de Constance is a fortification located in Aigues-Mortes, Occitanie, France.
The tower was built between 1242 and 1254 by Saint Louis (Louis IX) to house the king’s garrison. From the 13th to the 16th century, the lookout turret was used as a lighthouse.
In the early 14th century, Philippe le Bel used the fortified site to imprison the Knights Templar.
When Protestantism was banned in France, the tower was used as a prison for ‘heretic’ women. The most famous of them, Marie Durand, was held there at the age of 19 and released 38 years later.
