The Angelus is a Christian prayer recited three times a day in the Western Catholic Church. It is rung three times a day by bells, at six o’clock in the morning, noon and six o’clock in the evening. The exact time may vary depending on the region and parish.
The Angelus prayer consists of three Hail Marys separated by specific invocations. It takes its name from the first word of the Latin formula: ‘Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ’ (The Angel of the Lord announced to Mary).
In a society without individual clocks, this announcement set the pace of working life. When the bell rang, tradition dictated that Christians should stop what they were doing to pray.
