Tympanum of the right portal of Saint Gilles Abbey, southern France

Considered to be a stone book for the often illiterate faithful, the facade of the abbey church of Saint Gilles, built by the monks of the abbey between 1120 and 1160, is a masterpiece of Provencal Romanesque art. This monument is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO since 1998. Successive destructions due to the Wars of Religion as well as the French revolution still subsist today.
