View of Bethlehem in the early 20th century.
On the left is the chapel of the Carmelite Sisters and Beth Aram, completed in 1892, with its tower-shaped monastery (1876) reminiscent of the Tower of David. The convent’s altar was built above the Cave of David, also known as the Milk Grotto. On the right is the establishment of the Brothers of the Christian Schools of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, a place of interfaith education offering free primary tuition. Founded in 1893 it became Bethlehem University in 1973, the oldest university in the West Bank.
