Located in Lyon’s 5th arrondissement, in the heart of the medieval and Renaissance quarter of Vieux Lyon, Saint-Jean Cathedral is the episcopal see of the Archdiocese of Lyon. It holds the status of both a cathedral and a primatial church: this is why the Archbishop of Lyon bears the title of Primate of Gaul.
Severely damaged during the Wars of Religion in 1562, then by the French Revolution and the siege of Lyon in 1793, the primatial church was restored in the 19th century.
In December 1998, it was recognised as a World Heritage Site.
