This engraving is taken from the book La Guyane Française – Souvenirs et Impressions de voyage (French Guiana – Travel Memories and Impressions), written by a missionary, Reverend Father Brunetti (who often appears in the illustrations wearing a conical hat). The book recounts his second trip to French Guiana around 1889.
The engravings, signed by Canedi, seem to date back to his first trip, 27 years earlier.

This clergyman alternates between vivid and detailed descriptions, very classical evangelical considerations, and much more “ progressive” positions: for example, he strongly condemns the prison administration of the penal colony, deployed in French Guiana at that time.
