Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, led the country during the American Civil War, the worst constitutional, military and moral crisis the nation had ever faced.
He succeeded in preserving the Union against the Confederate States and secured the adoption of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. He was assassinated on 15 April 1865, five days after the end of hostilities, at the start of his second term, as part of a plot led by Confederate sympathisers.
