The al-Sayyid Hāshim Mosque, built in 1850 on the orders of the Ottoman Sultan ʿAbd al-Majīd I, is one of the most important mosques in Gaza. It suffered significant damage during the capture of the city by British troops led by General Allenby in 1917, and was rebuilt in the early 1920s.
