In 1895, the mayor of Brouzet-les-Alès, a small village in the south of France, broke new ground and asked its female residents to vote in a historic referendum to elect the two annual village bakers. Bread was very important at the time and prior to that initiative the bakers were designated by a small masculine committee. This was 50 years before French women were given the right to vote in 1945 after WWII.
