In our Religions series :
In this veritable ‘geography of Hell’, the damned are shown falling down 7 distinct paths. Those paths are marked by 7 letters corresponding to the deadly sins: O for Pride – also symbolised by a peacock -, A for Avarice (symbolised by a toad), L for Lust (a goat), E for Envy (a snake), G for Gluttony (a pig), C for Wrath (a lion), P for Laziness (a tortoise).
The devouring fire is the punishment common to all, but with particular punishments adapted to each cause of damnation.
Above the fallen archangel Lucifer, a stopped clock signals the eternity of torment. It will last forever and never cease.
Note at the bottom of the image: monsters trample underfoot the ‘heresiarchs’, whose grave sin is to have fought against the True Faith with bad books or tendentious newspapers.
