In 1876, novelist Alphonse Brown imagined the adventures of Captain Bob Kincardy travelling on the back of a whale. The story seems to have been inspired by one of the legendary voyages of Brandan, the mythical hero and Irish saint of the 6th century, who is said to have celebrated mass on his boat carried on the back of a giant whale.
