Famous for their long annual migrations, swallows migrate for one reason: the need for food. As the availability of the flying insects that swallows feed on decreases significantly in temperate regions of Europe during the winter months, these birds, weighing approximately 20g, head to Africa, thousands of kilometers away, to reach regions where their prey is more abundant.
