Paul Bourget (1852-1935) was a French writer and essayist, member of the Académie française.

Following in the tradition of French studies of character and the analytical novel – from Madame de Lafayette to Stendhal – he renewed the codes and contributed to the creation of the modern psychological novel.

But the end of his life was marked by his involvement in openly reactionary militant movements (traditionalist, Catholic, monarchist and antidreyfusard), which blurred the reading of his work, which gradually fell into oblivion.
