The chapel is part of the La Grave hospital that served the plague-stricken population during the Middle Ages and, from 1647 onwards, as a place of confinement for beggars, prostitutes and the mentally ill. Covering nearly six hectares, La Grave was the second largest hospital and the main maternity hospital in Toulouse for much of the 20th century.
