The Battle of Jemappes, in Belgium, took place on 6 November 1792 between Imperial Austria and Republican France.
The French Revolutionary Army, made up of 40,000 volunteers, secured victory over the Austrian army, largely due to its numerical superiority. This led to the conquest of the Austrian Netherlands.
Louis-Philippe d’Orléans, then only 19 years old and future King of the French in 1830, took part on the side of the revolutionaries. But the sight of the slaughter and bloodshed left him with a deep aversion to war.
