This engraving is part of an interesting series that illustrated a successful serialised novel towards the end of the 19th century. Thanks to the skill of the artist and the engraver, these images accurately depict a glimpse of ‘Parisian life’ at that time. Costumes, locations, set design, postures, props… and Paris in the background.
As for the fictional episodes themselves, they are ‘archetypal’. One would find them in many novels of that period. Hence the relevance of featuring them here!
