During the Boxer Rebellion (1899–1901) – an uprising against Western foreigners in China – France joined the Eight-Nation Alliance (which also comprised Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, Russia, the United States, Italy and Austria-Hungary) in order to safeguard their interests in the country.
