The Potala Palace in Lhasa is a 17th-century fortress situated on Marpori Hill in the centre of the Lhasa Valley. Built by the 5th Dalai Lama, Lobsang Gyatso (1617–1682), the Potala served as the principal residence of successive Dalai Lamas and housed the Tibetan Government until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising, following China’s forcible annexation of the country. Comprising a ‘White Palace’ and a ‘Red Palace’, along with their ancillary buildings, the complex embodied the union of Tibetan spiritual and temporal power, and their respective roles in the administration of the Tibetan theocracy. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this thirteen-storey building was among the tallest in the world (Wikipedia).
